According to statistics, men are more likely to suffer from mental disorders than women. Why is this happening? The fact is that the strong and the weaker sex are prone to various mental pathologies, scientists say.

Stress response

Many experts have long argued that it is time to introduce a gender approach in psychiatry, because the state of the psyche can very much depend on the hormonal sphere, which differs significantly in men and women. And the areas of the brain that are responsible for emotions and thinking work somewhat differently for both.

Not so long ago, specialists from the University of Minnesota conducted a study that analyzed the history of mental illness in 43,000 Americans. It turned out that women were more likely to suffer from increased anxiety or depression, while men were more likely to have antisocial behavior and problems associated with various addictions - alcoholism, drug addiction, gambling addiction. Of course, the behavior of the stronger sex looked more inadequate than that of the ladies.

Psychiatrists give the following explanation for this: women are naturally more emotional, but it is easier for them to get rid of a stressful state, since it is not shameful for a woman to cry or break dishes. Finally, you can cry about problems for friends or loved ones. If it comes to depression, then women usually prefer to experience it in themselves. At the same time, in the opinion of others, they can lead a normal life - go to work, do housework, take care of children, etc. That is, from the outside they look quite sane.

As for men, in a state of stress, they often behave impulsively, show aggression towards others.

Symptoms of male madness

Signs of a mental disorder in a man can be: excessive rudeness (for example, a man seems to start using obscene words for no reason); physical impact on surrounding objects, for example, he breaks furniture; attempts to start a fight for no particular reason; hypertrophied jealousy, which the companions of such men often complain about. Some people have obsessions, for example, they believe they have made a great discovery that can change the world. There are much more such "geniuses" among men than among the beautiful half of humanity.

Why are men at risk?

There are also much more schizophrenics among the stronger sex. Men more often than women suffer from neuroses, psychosis, manic-depressive syndrome, various phobias. And there are several reasons for this.

One of them is that the world makes much more demands on the male half of humanity than on the female. Even in childhood, the boy is taught that he is a future man, that he must be strong, brave, etc. And he cannot always correspond. At school, there are hooligans who tease and bully, in the army - hazing. I can't go to college, get a good job, make a career, adequately support my family. As a result, the man becomes complex, the psyche cannot stand it, breaks down. And sometimes irreversibly.

The second reason may lie in the fact that males, due to the appropriate lifestyle, are at risk of receiving head injuries. This can lead to epilepsy, increased excitability, and various somatic disorders.

Finally, many men are characterized by the systematic use of alcohol and drugs, which often provokes delirium tremens, hallucinations, panic attacks, and other disorders associated with delusions and obsessive-compulsive disorders. Suicidal tendencies can also be observed.

Thus, the spectrum of mental pathologies in men is wider than in women, and they are manifested brighter. According to experts, it is necessary to pay attention to the signs of mental illness in time - this will help stop it at the very beginning with the help of psychotherapy and medication.
