In the modern interpretation, the gods have no transitory status, only absolute. This is true for almost all major religions. However, even relatively recently, even ordinary people could receive divine status. Think of Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia or even one of the American presidents.
Empedocles
The philosopher and proto-scholar of ancient Greece became famous for his desire for divine status. Empedocles (according to the surviving data) knew how to raise people from the dead, turn the earth into food and was distinguished by a sharp mind. Climbing Mount Etna, the ambitious philosopher threw himself into its mouth: from the lava, the astonished audience threw out the bronze shoes of the ascended philosopher for amusement.
Antinous
Raising the status of the emperor to the divine was in the custom of the ancient Romans. However, Emperor Hadrian went farthest: he declared to the people the divine nature of his lover, Antinous. To the people of Rome and the surrounding area, such an act did not seem very correct, and Antinous accidentally drowned while swimming in a pond with crocodiles.

Haile Selassie
Haile Selassie was the 225th and last emperor of Ethiopia. He gave the country a constitution and, more importantly, fell under the prophecy of Marcus Garvey, an active preacher of Pan-Africanism in Jamaica. The Black King went into exile during the invasion of the Italian army and returned to the throne in 1941, already in the glow of his newfound divine status.
Sugawara no Michizane
A senior scholar, poet and courtier of the 9th century, he held important positions in the Japanese court. The emperor decided that Sugawara was plotting a conspiracy and exiled him as governor of a small island where the unfortunate man ended his days. Unexplained fires and epidemics soon began. Fearing the revenge of the spirits, the emperor hastened to posthumously elevate Sugawara no Michizane to the pantheon of deities. Oddly enough, it helped. In modern Japan, the god is still revered under the name Tenjin.
Imhotep
The pharaohs of Egypt were ranked among the pantheon of deities after death. Imhotep, who was born a commoner and rose to the rank of senior adviser to the pharaoh, was granted the status of a demigod. 2000 years later, already during the reign of the Persian Empire, Imhotep was "promoted" to a god.
Jiddu Krishnamurti
Many followers of the teachings of the Indian theosophist Jiddu Krishnamurti considered him an incarnation of the spiritual essence of Maitreya. He really resembled some kind of supreme being: he preached the rejection of statehood, welcomed progress and denied the racial identity of man.
