Scientists recently tested a new vaccine against the Zika virus in laboratory mice for the first time. The specialists were satisfied with the results and made sure that they were moving in the right direction.

Scientists from all over the world are currently developing an effective vaccine against the rapidly spreading Zika virus outside South America, but the pharmaceutical company Inovio Pharmaceuticals was one of the first organizations to receive visible results of their work. Its employees not only received a prototype drug, but also tested it on laboratory mice. The immune system of the animals responded adequately to the vaccine and began to actively produce antibodies and the so-called T cells, which are necessary to fight the virus. The specialists were satisfied with the results obtained and made sure that the work done by them did not go down the drain.

Recall that the Zika virus first seriously made itself felt in Colombia, after which it began to rapidly spread throughout the countries of South America. Today, patients infected with this disease are increasingly seeking medical care in the United States and Europe. The virus is transmitted exclusively by mosquitoes of the genus Aedes and is not transmitted from person to person. It poses the greatest danger to pregnant women who, after infection, have a risk of giving birth to a child with microcephaly.
