On Saturday, September 9, 2017, astronomers saw the most powerful solar flares in the past 12 years. Intense activity of the daylight has been observed already in the last few days, from about 6-8 September. Meteo-dependent people managed to feel weakness, loss of working capacity, drowsiness. What are the consequences of a sudden "solar" attack on our planet?
A plasma cloud, the release of which occurred towards the Earth, provoked a strong magnetic storm (it was assigned level 4 on a 5-point scale). Residents of Canada were able to see the aurora - celestial illumination was observed at mid and high latitudes. There were reports that in some regions there were problems with communication and with equipment capable of reacting to abnormal magnetic activity.
Researcher of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexei Struminsky stated that a sunquake could be observed during some of the flares. It was possible to record this curious natural phenomenon thanks to the photographs, which show how seismic waves propagate through the sun.
However, Struminsky is confident that the "solar attack" will not cause significant damage to human health or the stability of radio communications. According to the scientist, the powerful flash practically did not affect the performance of satellites and radio transmitters. The deterioration of well-being, which many people had to experience, Struminsky explained by the placebo effect.
And yet, the threat persists
It is possible that abnormal solar activity is capable of carrying a threat to all of humanity. This is the conclusion reached by researchers from NASA. According to astronomers of this aerospace agency, powerful flares in the sun can provoke earthquakes and other natural disasters, as well as cause volcanoes to awaken. Of particular concern in this regard are objects such as the supervolcano in the American National Park Yellowstone.
