Scientists in the United States of America tracking celestial bodies that threaten Earth say the asteroid threat is much more palpable than is commonly believed. In the vicinity of the Earth's orbit, there are a huge number of dangerous asteroids, a collision with any of which will cause a cataclysm of a planetary scale, according to ToDay News Ufa.
According to astronomers, anxiously peering into outer space in search of asteroids, there are more than fifteen thousand heavenly bodies dangerous for the Earth in the solar system.
“And these are only objects registered in our catalogs, but in fact there are many more of them, because we do not know all the asteroids - many of them are very difficult to detect. Of course, not all of the potentially dangerous asteroids pose a threat at this point in time, but more specifically, in 2017, the Earth is threatened by eight hundred and eighty-seven objects,”scientists say.
They add that some asteroids do not differ in any large mass, so even in the event of a collision, we will see a catastrophe of a local scale - as, for example, in Chelyabinsk.
However, there are also such asteroids, the consequences of which fall to Earth will be fatal for all mankind.
