Geophysicists from the University of Rochester John Tarduno and Vincent Hare named the location of the anomaly associated with the imminent reversal of the Earth's magnetic field. American scientists presented their conclusions in the column of The Conversation.
In their opinion, the Earth's magnetic field has been weakening over the past 160 years, and the main reason for this is the South Atlantic anomaly, which extends in the Southern Hemisphere between Zimbabwe and Chile. The magnetic field strength in this area is so weak that, according to scientists, the satellites located above it are practically not protected from cosmic radiation.
The source of the South Atlantic Anomaly is hidden in the interior of the planet, between the core and the mantle, in an area under South Africa, where the direction of the magnetic field is currently opposite to its average (global) orientation.
Geophysicists note that the magnetic field over the South Atlantic Anomaly continues to weaken, which portends a global reversal of the planet's magnetic poles. An event of this kind, according to experts, will affect the performance of ground and orbital electronic systems and navigation equipment, as well as the incidence of cancer.
