The fireball that appeared over the Indian state of Kerala amazed both locals and scientists. Indian scientists are currently trying to figure out the reasons for its appearance. "Scientists have suggested that it could be a meteor, but some believe that it is the debris of a falling satellite or rocket," - reports DNA India.
“The high proportion of charred debris and the presence of iron and nickel in them are signs of a meteor, but we can only draw a final conclusion after conducting a series of tests that will take at least a week,” said scientist K. P. Pravin of the Geological Society of India.
According to NDTV, the fireball has caused panic in several districts of Kerala.
“Our first guess is that it may have been a meteor. The debris we collected on site has a high specific gravity. Although they are small in size, they weigh more than normal,”said Sekhar Kuriakose, a scientist at the Disaster Management Agency.
“So far, this is just an assumption, and we have not made final conclusions. We will transfer the collected samples to the Geological Society of India for further research. Conclusions will be drawn only after careful study,”he added.
