The US Department of Defense is verifying information on an alleged missile launch off the coast of southern California
At the moment, there is little information about a rocket or similar "large object" that soared in the skies over California on Monday. The launch was filmed from a KCBS helicopter. The video posted on the Internet clearly shows a large object captured from a considerable distance, which rises to a great height and, like a rocket, leaves behind a smoky plume.
As the official representative of the US Department of Defense Dave Lapan said, the Pentagon is carefully studying this video, but cannot yet give a clear explanation. “No one in the ministry has yet been able to explain what that means,” Lapan admitted. According to him, “at the moment there is every reason to believe that the Pentagon was not involved in this,” but perhaps we are talking about a launch made by some private company. At the same time, a representative of the military department hastened to reassure his compatriots. “There is no cause for alarm so far,” Lapan said, noting that “the situation may change depending on what we can figure out.”
The incident was reported earlier on Tuesday, November 9, by KCBS - a reporter for the TV channel managed to shoot from a helicopter the alleged launch of an unidentified object over the Pacific Ocean, 35 miles west of Los Angeles. As can be seen in the video posted on the website of the CBS TV channel, the launched object does indeed resemble a rocket - in particular, a similar flight path and a rocket-like plume left by it indicate this.
The Air Force and the US Navy, where journalists asked to clarify the situation, found it difficult to comment on the alleged missile launch over California. In turn, the representative of the Ministry of Defense Dave Lapan (Dave Lapan) added that the Pentagon does not know about the origin of the mysterious object in the sky over the ocean.
Lapin also stressed that according to preliminary data, the US defense department was not involved in the launch. “None of the structures under our jurisdiction has yet admitted to the launch,” he said.
According to him, it could be a commercial facility launched by some private company. However, he noted, the military does not yet have an exact explanation for what happened.
Meanwhile, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) was quick to announce that the object seen in the sky over California does not pose a threat to US security. “We confirm that there is no threat to the country; there is every reason to believe that foreign states are not involved in this,”NORAD assured.

Missile tests off the coast of California occur regularly, AP notes. At the same time, as a rule, the military warns about planned launches in advance so that commercial aircraft and ships can leave the potentially dangerous area. According to a Pentagon spokesman, this time no warnings about the upcoming launch were made. Permits for commercial launches in the area have also not been issued, the military noted.

The mysterious "missile" off the coast of California is an optical illusion, according to a military expert
The mysterious "rocket", which was allegedly filmed by CBS reporters last Monday off the California coast, is just an "optical illusion." This conviction was expressed on Tuesday by one of the most authoritative independent military experts in the United States, the head of the research organization GlobalSecurity, John Pike.
“This is an airplane flying in the direction of the TV camera, and its contrail is illuminated by the rays of the setting sun,” said Pike.
According to the expert, the object cannot be a rocket, because it can be seen that it changes the direction of flight. “The local broadcaster has cut the footage and there is no continuous picture,” Pike said. “But you can see that the object is changing course. Rockets don't do that."
Pike expressed bewilderment as to why the Pentagon experts still did not figure out that the contrail was filmed on the video. “The Air Force must understand how such a trail is formed,” he stressed. "I don't know why the military doesn't want to admit the obvious."
The two-minute video was filmed from a KCBS helicopter. It shows at a great distance an object gaining height, which, like a rocket, leaves behind a plume of smoke.
The Pentagon said on Tuesday that there were no American missile launches that day. And the Northern Command of the US Armed Forces, which is responsible for the defense of the continental part of the country, together with the North American Aerospace Defense Command indicated that the launch of any foreign missile was also not recorded. “We can confirm that nothing threatens our country,” they stressed in their joint statement. "We will provide the public with more information as soon as this issue is clarified."
