Israeli geophysicists said that the Moon was formed as a result of the collision of the Earth with many other planets. A study on this topic was published in the journal Nature Geoscience, briefly reported by The Guardian.

Scientists have found that for the formation of a satellite, it is enough for the Earth to collide with 20 celestial bodies, the largest of which can be comparable in size to the Moon and Mars. The debris (collision products) then, according to experts, over the course of about 100 million years and could form the modern satellite of the planet.

Scientists came to their conclusions after conducting a series of computer simulations. In their opinion, the proposed explanation makes it easy to solve the problem of the similarity of the chemical composition of the Earth and the Moon.

A popular hypothesis for the origin of the satellite, formulated in the mid-1970s, suggests that the Earth collided with debris from a celestial body the size of Mars. The Moon was later formed from its fragments.
