The Mountain of the Dead gained immense fame in the winter of 1959, when a group of tourists disappeared in its vicinity. What exactly happened then remains a mystery to this day. It is known that on January 23, 1959, a group of students led by an experienced tourist Igor Dyatlov went on a ski trip in the Sverdlovsk region. A week later, on February 1, the group stopped on the slope of Mount Kholat-Chakhl, not far from the nameless pass, which later received the name Dyatlov.
It was expected that on February 12 the group would reach the village of Vizhai, from where it would send a telegram to the institute. However, no one showed up there. Search and rescue operations began on February 20. On February 26, an empty tent with a wall cut from the inside was found, in which equipment, outerwear and shoes of tourists were left. The first bodies were found the next day. Someone died from hypothermia, someone had head injuries, and one of the girls had her tongue cut off.
