The article, which was published in the print edition of Science Advances, indicated that GMOs, which are so commonly used in the United States of America, caused a marked decrease in the amount of pesticide used, but helped to increase the use of herbicides in weed control.
Federico Chiliberto of the University of Virginia says: “We have been monitoring some farmers for decades to help us understand how GMOs are affecting the use of chemicals. Initially, the use of herbicides decreased with the transition to GMOs, but then their consumption increased, as the weeds gained resistance to the action of glyphosate."
Genetically modified organisms are produced by incorporating some genes into their DNA. This technology makes it possible to breed plants, animals or bacteria whose properties are known in advance. Usually, when trying to ban the use of GMOs, scientists talk about genetically modified plants that are grown specifically for humans and animals.
