Petrovitsky boulder: a stone guest from the distant past on the Izhora land.
The inhabitants of the Leningrad region will not be surprised by the boulders, someone generously scattered over our land silent stone evidence of their presence. In our area, they are everywhere: they can be seen along the edge of the coast of the Gulf of Finland, they hide in dense forests, lie along highways and are even located within the boundaries of many cities. However, even against their background, the Petrovitsky boulder makes a really strong impression!
The dimensions of the stone are astonishing: approximately 33 meters in girth and 5.5 meters in height at its highest point. According to some estimates, its weight is at least 500 tons! How did this miracle of nature end up on the Izhora land?
It is believed that the retreating glacier pulled boulders behind it: "Retreating, the glacier" took with it as a keepsake "rocks, transferring them over considerable distances."
Personally, I do not understand the mechanism of the "retreat" of the glacier. Why shouldn't it just melt? Or maybe it did not retreat, but advanced?
