Unfriendly place … but reserved

Another very interesting Serbian tourist attraction is located in the southern part of the country on Mount Radan: there is a real geological park and … the famous "Devil's City" (translated from Serbian âavoљa varosh). Natural education, but the locals believe that it appeared “in one disastrous night”, when the depraved settlers of the old days decided to marry brother and sister here …

Today you can see 202 stone pillars with an average diameter of 1 meter and a height of 2 to 15 meters. On their tops are stone blocks weighing up to 100 kg.

The pillars of natural origin were created by weathering. Nearby, there are two springs with high mineralization (up to 15 g / l), which is why the vegetation in the adjacent area is rather scarce.

Locals know exactly what made this area so special. According to legend, in ancient times people drank water from the local spring, lost their minds ("Don't drink, Ivanushka, you will become a kid!..") and approved the wedding between brother and sister. God, angry at this "inappropriateness", turned all the participants in the wedding feast into stone statues. And the name of the evil spirits, which beguiled all these “pillars” and brought them to such a sadly immovable state, was named not only the area itself, but also both sources: the Devil's Water and the Devil's Well.

In 1959, the territory of the "City of the Devil" received the protected status of a natural monument, and a little later, UNESCO got in the way, including it in the world heritage sites.

Let's watch a video about "Devil's City" on Mount Radan:
