Moulay Ismail ibn Sherif was born in 1646 in the family of Muhammad I al-Sherif, the leader of the Alawite sheriffs. It took Mulai about 20 years to gain a foothold on the throne after the repression. After bloody conflicts, he created a powerful army in Morocco - it consisted mainly of black slaves, who were very loyal to him. In addition, he created an Arab militia.

But the personality of the Sultan is especially interesting to many not because of his achievements in power and not because of cruelty to enemies and opposition, but because of his personal life. There were 500 concubines in his harem. According to some scientists, he regularly slept with only 65-110 of them.
It is believed that they gave birth to 700 boys. Obviously, no one counted the number of girls, but the French diplomat Dominique Busno said that in 1704 Moulay had 1171 children in total (however, the Guinness Book of Records calls the number 888). In addition, Busno, who visited Morocco in the 18th century, said that in addition to the concubines, the sultan also had 4 wives. At that moment he was 57 years old.

Nevertheless, many researchers, according to kulturologia.ru, doubt that the Moroccan ruler really had such a number of children. They indicate that not every day a woman is able to become pregnant, and some concubines could be infertile.
It is also known about the ruler that he asked Louis XIV for the hand of one of his daughters and wanted to turn Meknes into Moroccan Versailles.
