Researchers at the American Temple University published the results of studies that were carried out over two years. Experts have studied a mysterious underwater basin off the coast of New Orleans (USA), which is dubbed the "lake of death."
Details of the research results can be found on the pages of the Daily Mail. Experts found an unusual lake at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico in 2014. They managed to find it by means of a deep-sea robot that studied the surface of the bottom. At that moment, scientists concluded that they had stumbled upon one of the most unusual places on the planet. It turned out that the water in the "lake of death" is five times saltier than the sea.
The underwater pool is located at a depth of 1000 meters and its diameter is 34 meters. The lake consists of two layers, the first one reaches a depth of three meters. It is there that the water is the saltiest, and the temperature is 7.8 degrees Celsius.
The second layer of the lake is more dense, bottom sediments containing an increased level of hydrocarbons are observed. Experts explained why the pool is called the "jacuzzi of death". The fact is that because of the warm water, living organisms often get there, but the huge concentration of salt quickly kills them. Many skeletons of fish and dead crabs were found in the pool. However, this hostile environment makes this place even more amazing.
