For example, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos recently supported a very interesting start-up that deals with aging by removing senescent cells.
According to CNBC, the startup is called Unity Biotechnology and in addition to Mr. Bezos, PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel and a host of other people also invested in it. The exact volume of investments has not been disclosed, but it is known that in a very short period of time the company was able to attract about $ 700 million in investments and this amount may increase in the future.
So why is Unity Biotechnology so attractive? The main target at the moment is osteomyelitis. The company's experts are already working on a drug that will treat arthritis of the joints by destroying aging cells. The company uses the same approach in the fight against other diseases, but the drug for osteomyelitis is now the main one, since it is already undergoing the first stage of clinical trials. In a series of experiments, it was found that the removal of senescent cells extended the life of the experimental mice by 30% and allowed them to avoid the diseases of the joints and eyes that are usually associated with age. However, despite the very optimistic results, the employees of Unity Biotechnology themselves are very modest about their development.
