At the dawn of the hobby for "saucers", when flying vessels caused a cheerful mood and a desire to play a trick on gullible friends, there was no time for jokes in the higher spheres. They did not know how to hide from people a disturbing new, as yet semi-ghostly reality. The United States, with its nuclear arsenal, has become the main target of inquisitive aliens. Here it was most difficult to hide their presence, they were very conspicuous. And those who were collecting information about UFOs were required to extinguish the alarms and fears of unwitting witnesses of their flights for a long time. Both the CIA and the military decided that the best way to neutralize interest in the unusual phenomenon would be to laugh. It is enough to make the "plates" the subject of jokes and ridicule. And for this you can throw wood on the fire - spread messages that are easily refuted,then real information will be greeted with distrust. So, when a forest is on fire, a counter fire is launched towards the strip of fire. Two walls of fire consume all the oxygen as they approach each other, and the fire fizzles out.
To achieve such an effect, in relation to anomalous phenomena, they used the counterarguments of the Condon Commission, which reduced almost every evidence to the flight of meteorological balloons, the reflections of the sun, the eddies of the atmosphere, the appearance of Venus, or "swirls" of the psyche of persons claiming that they were visiting the "saucer", flew to a distant star system, and returned home for dinner.
Great help was provided by sectarians, religious fanatics, who desperately need "signs" to prepare people "for the second coming", "the end of the world" and make money on this, posing as saviors of lost humanity. In order to let off steam from the alien hysteria, to deprive it of its real basis, all kinds of spiritualistic circles, summoning "spirits", demonstrations of conversations with "aliens" using parapsychology or the media, when "plates" were driven into some fourth or fifth and so on dimensions, black holes and other exotic categories. Just cranks, lovers of practical jokes and fools were also good. Like a kid in southern Italy who wrapped himself in toilet paper and presented himself as an alien.
But such cheap tricks, capable of hitting gullible neighbors, so to speak, tricks with their subsequent and quick exposure, were preferred by more sophisticated methods designed for a long-term effect. This required serious creators of book, film and television production, false soothsayers and pseudo-prophets who clothed their fantasies in more scientific clothes. Skilled charlatans managed to attract public attention to themselves for a longer period of time, to win over people and at the same time to make big money on publications and film adaptations of their "terribly true" stories.
Here are just a few of them.
In 1953, technician Daniel Fry in the desert near the American base White Sands (White Sands) encountered an American football ball that turned out to be a spaceship. He was taken to New York and brought back in half an hour. In parting, an invisible teacher named A-Lan instilled in Fry the importance of understanding, and Fry founded the Understanding Corporation, one of the first to develop an alien cult. Frye argued that the aliens are the descendants of the Martians who survived the war that destroyed Martian civilization 30 thousand years ago. Hence the lesson - understanding is needed.
In 1954, two societies of fans of extraterrestrial intelligence were created at once. Philosopher, and in fact a former taxi driver in London, George King created the "Etheric Society". He heard the "voice" of the inhabitant of Venus, Aetherius, who turned three and a half thousand years old. King declared himself the "mental communicator" of Aetherius and transmitted the instructions of the members of the "Solar Hierarchy." His preaching was, however, noble. He demanded to prohibit atomic energy and play with it, to return to the path of the "illumined", first of all Christ, Buddha and Krishna, who were members of the "hierarchy". Members of this society believed in the transmigration of souls and believed that humanity originated on Phaethon, the tenth planet of the solar system.

In the same 1954, George Van Tassel gathered in the town of Giant Rock, USA, the "Space Convention" of American ufologists. There they gathered annually until the death of the head of their organization (1971). Tassel claimed that in a dream back in 1951 he came into contact with the extraterrestrial being Solgonda, who patiently passed on to him the knowledge that Tassel had captured in five books. The indefatigable initiator of communication with otherworldly forces then founded the "Church of Universal Wisdom" and "College", which served to develop science and philosophy in accordance with the principles of the cosmic "Council of Seven Fires", which united, according to him, the crews of flying "saucers" plying around the Earth.
Being a wealthy man, he erected a special four-storey building "Integratron" near his home, where he intended to comprehend the "hidden truths of life" and the secrets of immortality. But he did not have time to master immortality, and the house remained unfinished. (These two cases are described by V. Gakov in his book "Dark Water in the Clouds", poking fun at ufology.)
And finally, in the same year, the "pilot of the Tunguska meteorite" appeared in the United States. His name was D. Schumann, and he flew to us from the constellation Centaurus. In 1908 he crashed over Siberia, but "teleported" to the USA. He made good money by lecturing about his wreck and about life in the constellation of Centaurus, until the tax office determined that Schumann had a hard time "teleporting" in 1908, since he was born in 1912. For fraud, he was “teleported” to prison.
The most memorable and successful adventurer was Georges Adamski. His parents took him from Poland to the United States in 1893, when the boy was two years old. He completed his military service in the southern United States, then worked as a decorator and artist in Yellowstone National Park. He contrived to give lectures on philosophy, although he did not receive any education, then switched to the occult. Organized in the town of Laguna Beach "Royal Order of Tibet" and even a monastery of the order. Then he changed his place of residence and worked as a chef in a roadside cafe near the famous Palomar Observatory. Apparently, this neighborhood led him to the idea of posing as an astronomer and even a professor. The aliens were just a stone's throw from here. First, Adamsky announced that in October 1946 he saw a fleet of aliens near Mount Palomar, where the largest telescope is located.
He promised to show local residents hundreds of his UFO photographs. In 1952, he said, Adamsky shook hands with the first extraterrestrial being. The creature was tall - 165 centimeters, graceful and courteous. They communicated using telepathy. By that time, Adamsky had written the fantastic story "An Imaginary Trip to the Moon, Venus and Mars." It, fortunately for him, was not published, which allowed the author to use fragments from it as evidence of his no longer imaginary, but an actual journey on a UFO.
In 1953, together with the Englishman Desmond Leslie Adamsky published the book "Flying saucers have landed." The description of an alien in a ski suit migrated here from a book that publishers had previously refused to publish: “His face was roundish, with a very high forehead, his eyes were large, calm, gray-green, slightly slanted, his nose was thinly outlined, his mouth was of medium size, with beautiful white teeth”, etc. The alien turned out to be an inhabitant of Venus and later brought Adamskiy to the inhabitants of Saturn and Mars. They took him for a ride in space, and he was greeted and kissed by "extremely beautiful female pilots." They also told him that they are very afraid of atomic explosions on Earth, which could upset the balance of the Galaxy.
Each time, publishing the continuation of his space travels, Adamsky warned that he had stocked up on unusually expressive photographs. They really wanted to see them, especially the "beautiful sector around the center of the moon" he described, with abundant vegetation, trees and animals. Even on the side facing the Earth, he saw "a little fluffy creature", and on the "other" side of the Moon he saw cities, mountains, rivers, lakes and "people hurrying along narrow, clean streets." No less intriguing were photographs of Venus, where he saw "birds such as canaries, horses and cows."
But, alas, the Pentagon every time, according to it, intercepted these "important pictures" and buried them in its archives. Nevertheless, the glory of the space traveler grew. He traveled around Europe with lectures, which were listened to with bated breath. He was met by Juliana, Queen of the Netherlands, and on May 31, 1963, he was received by Pope John XXIII.
Unfortunately for Adamskiy, the Soviet probe soon photographed the far side of the moon. But he was not taken aback and said that "the Russians retouched their pictures" to deceive the Americans.
Before his death, Adamsky organized, with the help of a certain Madeleine Rodeffer, the filming of the "plate" in Maryland. Two experts even admitted that the film was genuine. Others claimed that it was a fake, and the "plate" was made in the studio. Adamsky did not live to see his full exposure. He died on April 23, 1965, four days before the Americans landed on the moon, where there were no streets or furry animals. And his partner Madeleine said that those shots that look fake are the fruit of the Russians' fraud: they intercepted the tape before the development in order to replace some of the genuine footage with fake ones in order to discredit Adamskiy.
After his death, there were enthusiasts who founded the "George Adamskiy Foundation", which has survived to this day. The foundation trades in photo and film fakes left over from this gifted dreamer and exploiter of human trustfulness and thirst for miracles. In fairness, let us note that on the eve of his death, Adamsky admitted that all the stories that he published as genuine were his literary, in the genre of fantasy, works. But since no one wanted to publish them, he had to pass these stories off as real events.
There are innumerable speculations on contacts with alien intelligence, joint walks in space next to the "blue-eyed Rada" or "blond Arkon", as well as the preachers of "peace and friendship" posing as intermediaries with extraterrestrial forces.
The incredible story of his contacts with aliens from the Pleiades constellation was composed by Edward Albert Mayer, a farmer and retired from Switzerland. He has seen several films about his "travels" and founded a society called FIGU and the "Semjaze Silver Star Center", where he preaches and sells his "photographs" and souvenirs. Among them are “Semyaze's hair”, a resident of the Pleiades, who, when analyzed, turned out to be ordinary human hair. And his "plate", or, as he called it, "beam ship", was found in the pavilion suspended from a fishing line. It was a model made for fake filming. Quite a few people believed the deceiver and attributed the exposure of his tricks to the intrigues of special services. His ex-wife, Greek Kaliopa Zafiris, said, however, after the divorce, that she had nothing against Mayer,but that "his contacts are lies and deception from beginning to end."
All this charlatanism, most likely, would not have blossomed so magnificently, if not for the initial lie that the special services (in vain they were scolded by the charlatans themselves!) Authorized to invent the Condon Commission and the Robertson Bureau instead of the truth about UFOs. This untied the hands and tongues of a large number of adventurers, mystics and visionaries who led people away from the serious problems associated with UFOs and those who control them.
But perhaps the most ambitious was the story of the film by businessman Ray Santilli about the autopsy (autopsy) of the dead alien crew members, a film that went around many countries and was shown, in particular, on Russian television on October 22, 1996. This film won over many. They assured that US President Truman himself was present at the autopsy in 1947. Some experts swore that the footage was genuine. Others noticed that the autopsy was done unprofessionally. The surgeon incorrectly held the lancet in his hands, cut the stomach in the wrong sequence, from where, according to the rules, the entrails are immediately taken out, which are taken apart on the table. This is not how the craniotomy is performed. And many of the elements were not shown at all on the set. They replied that the autopsy at the NASA base was people who were not very accustomed to such operations, since special secrecy was observed. Nevertheless, many of the characteristics of the "alien" in the film are in the spirit of the testimony of those who were involved in the Roswell incident. And although a number of experts categorically stated that this was a fake, that a mock-up of an alien was made, disputes about the authenticity of the film continue. Santilli did not provide any negative or film samples that would help resolve the dispute. The fashion for such fabrications turned out to be contagious. Russian ufologist E. Bachurin reported in May 1998 about the discovery of an alien apparatus in the shape of a "cigar" in the Tien Shan region. Ufologists of the Kazakh branch of SAKKUFON allegedly examined it at the site near the Shaitan-Bazar village - the object was in a torn state, but they said that, despite this, it was protected by radiation. In August 1998, a group of ufologists led by N. Subbotin, to whom Bachurin told about his find, visited the crash site. But there was nothing left. Where did the object disappeared, which was allegedly 500 meters away. Picked up by aliens? Our military? Or was it not there at all?
And on September 13, 1998, the Americans watched the film "The KGB Secret Dossier on UFOs," prepared by the American TNT company on the basis of a film allegedly bought in Moscow on the "black KGB market for $ 10,000." The market, in fact, seems to have been "black", but had nothing to do with the KGB or UFOs. We made the film as a commercial for advertising in Alabin near Moscow in 1998. It included footage allegedly testifying to the crash of a flying "saucer" in the Sverdlovsk region. Soldiers from military units and several actors took part in the shooting. The Americans, as they say, bought it, but, apparently, they themselves wanted it.
And finally, we can mention the trick of the journalists of Komsomolskaya Pravda, who were not too lazy to trample a circle in a field near Moscow in order to pass it off as a work of aliens. Self-exposure deception amused their pride, as can be seen from the publication of "Komsomolskaya Pravda" from August 31 to September 7, 2001 with the following text on the front page: "The mysterious circle in the field near Moscow was made by Komsomolskaya Pravda correspondents. And none of the experts who conducted the research DID NOT DETECT FALSE! " On this buffoonery, they naturally made some money by making a note about the "work" of UFOs and inventing "eyewitnesses". The newspaper sold out well!
Erik von Daniken, whose books "Memories of the Future", "Gods from Space" are popular all over the world, stands apart among the authors touching upon the topic of alien visits, especially in ancient times. The Swiss writer acts not only as the author of hypotheses, but also as a traveler who seeks to translate his "annals of the past" into films. He does it with brilliance and courage. He also headed the international "Ancient Astronautical Society", created on September 14, 1973.
His belief that aliens "created humanity" by turning our ancestors into intelligent beings may have a right to exist. Among the arguments and artifacts that he abundantly introduced into his works are both deep and superficial. Undoubtedly, they develop imagination, curiosity, serve as an example of popularization even when their basic premises do not stand up to criticism.
"Tektites", glassy masses in deserts? These are traces of space launches, from which the sand has sintered. Giant slabs of old buildings in Baalbek and elsewhere? This is only possible for people armed with the knowledge and technology of aliens. Scientists, however, if they wanted to take up the refutation of these postulates of Daniken, could object that sand in deserts bakes even when it is struck by lightning, which is rare in these latitudes. And the ancient builders, as the inhabitants of Easter Island demonstrated to the tireless traveler Thur Heyerdahl, could erect giant statues and move blocks of stones in unusually simple and effective ways, without straining at the same time.
In Egypt, on the way to Assuan, they explained to me how huge blocks of superhard granite were extracted from the earth by ancient stonecutters. Pieces of wood were inserted into small cracks and watered. From getting wet, they swelled and widened these cracks. The solid lump cracked, and the material for the sculptors was released. This is how giant statues of Ramses II and other pharaohs were born.
When I happened to be in Baalbek, a city built, according to legends, by Cain himself, I went to look at the famous stone blocks weighing hundreds of thousands of tons, laid at the base of the buildings - I wanted to form my own opinion about their origin. Despite the antiquity - 1.5-2 thousand years - the temple foundations have preserved traces of ancient wooden formwork, into which small stones and cement mass were piled. It was sintered, solidified and made up a monolith (apparent) - in essence, stone concrete. This fact does not in the least belittle the great feat of the ancient builders, who created a magnificent complex of buildings dedicated to the main deities of antiquity, but aliens have nothing to do with it, no matter how offensive it may be.
I remember that the alien hypothesis of the construction of these buildings was supported by I. Shklovsky, our astronomer and science fiction writer. Later he refused it, agreed that the earthly reason might well be enough here, since the ancient Romans already knew what cement is and knew how to handle it.
But, frankly, it's a shame that Shklovsky also renounced those of his alien hypotheses, for which there were grounds. True, the pictures of Phobos and Deimos, the satellites of Mars, indicate that they are unlikely to be created artificially, but this does not mean that an ancient civilization could not nest nearby, under them.
However, back to von Daniken. It seems that over time, he became less demanding about the development of the topics he declared. "Gold of the Gods" was a forgery that he built together with the Argentine adventurer Juan Moric. He announced that he had discovered a labyrinth city near Ecuador full of gold items. There even seemed to be a "zoo" of animals made of gold, as well as an ancient library with texts on metal plates. Von Daniken contented himself with entering one of the side caves of the "city" about which the enterprising Argentinian spoke, did not find anything worthwhile, but confirmed - yes, I saw it all with my own eyes. Moric later in an interview with Der Spiegel said that Daniken had never been to the caves. It was a purely commercial gamble, Daniken promised a large sum of money for the caves, and then they fell out. On one lie another was piled up. Alas.
