After the assassination attempt, on Sunday November 24, Oswald was led through the basement of the Dallas Police Department to be transferred to the Dallas County Jail. At 11:21 am, Dallas nightclub owner Jack Ruby walked out of the crowd and shot Oswald in the stomach. Oswald died at 1:07 pm in the same Dallas hospital where Kennedy had died two days earlier.

Ruby later said that he lost his head over the Kennedy assassination and that his motive for assassinating Oswald was "… saving Mrs. Kennedy the discomfiture of coming back to trial." There is a version that Ruby's actions were part of a conspiracy.
