The devastating earthquake in Italy, the number of human casualties of which has already approached three hundred, is a warning of impending tremors in Europe, seismologists say, noting that the real threat of a powerful earthquake exists for the capital of the Russian Federation.

Tremors such as those that struck Italy could occur near Moscow at any time, says Alexei Zavyalov, a Russian seismologist.

“The Earth's interior, despite all their seeming monolithicity at first glance, is the result of a continuous process of interaction of a huge complex of factors, therefore earthquakes are a common phenomenon for any region of the Earth, including Europe. Not a single state in the world is immune from the sudden activation of tectonic processes, the result of which usually becomes an earthquake of one or another power,”says Zavyalov.

Moscow, being an overpopulated metropolis with a colossal technogenic load, is one of the probable epicenters of future aftershocks, which pose a rather significant threat to the Russian capital, the scientist notes.
