The remains of 14 women and 9 males of young and old age were discovered by archaeologists at Stonehenge. The find suggests that this structure was used for cremation and burial during the Bronze Age. During a recent excavation, Aubrey Hole 7, one of 56 holes located around the stone monuments, was investigated by experts. The holes date back to 3100 - 2140. BC.
The bodies of the dead were burned. During the latest excavations, archaeologists have not been able to find small children, according to the Daily Mail. Most likely, their bodies were also burned, however, according to scientists, their ashes could be scattered over the nearby Avon River.
The burial found by the researchers differs in that it contained mainly the remains of women. Other Neolithic burials in southern Britain tended to have more male remains. Archaeologists believe that people of high social status were buried in Stonehenge.
The Aubrey Hole was first excavated in the 1920s. archaeologist William Hawley, who did not remove the remains, leaving them for further study. During recent excavations, scientists have collected about 45 kg of fragments. Osteological analysis and computed tomography were used to study the remains of the deceased.
