The Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (Enea) has published a report on five years of research on the Shroud of Turin

The research participants - di Lazzaro, Murra, Santoni, Nikelatti and Baldacchini - tried to understand how the image was so clearly imprinted on the linen fabric of the Shroud. In addition, they set themselves the task of determining what physical and chemical processes can lead to the appearance of this type of staining of the canvas, as on the Turin Shroud.

According to InoPressa.ru on Thursday. talking about the publication in the newspaper La Stampa, the researchers proceeded from the last and only complete study of the canvas, carried out by a group of American scientists STURP (Shroudof Turin Reasearch Project).

As noted by La Stampa, as a result of their own research, Italian scientists have completely refuted the claim that the Turin Shroud is a medieval fake. The report says: “The double image, front and back, of a person subjected to torture and crucifixion, which is visible on the linen fabric of the Turin Shroud, has numerous unusual characteristics, chemical and physical, which at present cannot be reproduced in laboratory conditions, the impossibility of repetition (a hence, falsification) of the image on the shroud does not allow formulating a reliable hypothesis about the mechanism of the imprint formation”. Today, science is unable to explain how a body imprint was formed on the Shroud, according to an Italian newspaper.

The origin of the imprint on the Shroud is unknown. This is the essence of the so-called "mystery of the Shroud of Turin", scientists say. There is no image under the drops of blood. This means that traces of blood appeared on the tissue before the image appeared. Thus, the image was formed later. In addition, all blood stains are clearly defined, so it can be assumed that the body was not removed from the sheet. In addition, there are no signs of decomposition on the tissue, which usually appear 40 hours after death. The researchers also concluded that the body was on the canvas for no more than two days, the author of the article writes.

One of the versions of the appearance of the image on the tissue was an electromagnetic effect. But the results of Enea's experiments indicate that short and intense, like a flash, directed ultraviolet radiation can color linen fabric in such a way that many features of the body imprint are reproduced on it, including color tone, surface coloration of the outer fibers of the fabric and the absence of fluorescence. However, as scientists from Enea emphasize, the total power of ultraviolet radiation required to instantly color the surface of a linen sheet corresponding to the body of a person of average height is 34 billion watts, and such power cannot be produced by any of the existing sources of ultraviolet radiation.

According to the scientists, the research is not finished yet. They have to collect "pieces of a scientific puzzle - complex and exciting." The mystery of the origin of the image on the Shroud of Turin "challenges our intellect," La Stampa quotes the words of Pope John Paul II.
