But experts who were directly involved in the investigation of such incidents are still alive. Meet Valery Postnikov, one of the most respected experts in the field of aircraft accident investigation.
Valery Aleksandrovich, in Soviet times you started studying UFOs. Why?
- In the early 80s, I was seconded from the State Research Institute of Civil Aviation to one of the Moscow region research institutes, where there was a secret department for anomalous phenomena. My task was to prepare certificates for each of these events related to civil aviation. The information received here was simply overwhelming, but, of course, it was strictly forbidden to share with those who had no clearance. Work in this research institute did not leave time for personal life. Two years later, my wife presented an ultimatum: either I am moving to another job, or I am leaving the family. And I returned to investigating the incidents in the USSR State Aviation Inspectorate.
Even earlier I was found by a pilot of a Georgian plane, whose crew was injured after a meeting with a UFO described in "Trud". After the accident, the crew was immediately sent for research to the Institute of Hematology. So, in the conclusion it was said that science does not know how a person with such a blood formula can exist: they meant ROE, erythrocytes, red and white bodies, etc.
“I was written off, although I feel fine,” the pilot complained. "Help me get a flight permit or at least a disability." I talked to the deputy minister, the head of the main inspection of the USSR MGA, but both just threw up their hands … The last meeting with the pilot took place in the kitchen. We drank a glass with him, and I honestly admitted that I sympathize, but I cannot help, because I gave a nondisclosure agreement.
Nevertheless, "Trud" then managed to lift the veil of secrecy
- It was an accident, a gross oversight of the system. I still cannot understand how this happened.

It is not clear why hide what can no longer be hidden?
- Apparently, there is an agreement on this at the level of the leaders of the countries. It is known that, for example, at one time British Prime Minister Winston Churchill forbade the pilots of the Royal Air Force to talk about meetings with unidentified flying objects, so as not to provoke panic in society.
Can you name the regions of the country where abnormal phenomena occur most often?
- We have this in the west of the European part, Murmansk, the mountainous regions of the Caucasus, Pamir, Altai. And also Eastern Siberia, the Baikal zone. And there is a lot of evidence. Including the most incredible ones. As one pilot told me, "it was teasing." That is, the object changed shape on the fly, as in a cartoon: then wings or mustaches grow, then suddenly it takes the form of an airplane. I remember that Norway and Sweden began to make claims to us: Soviet submarines are entering their territorial waters. In response, our commander-in-chief of the Navy offered the Scandinavians to sink unidentified underwater objects - we, they say, will only say thanks.
An amazing case is known during the Dnepr military exercises in Ukraine. A whole tank armada was gathered there, but on the command "Forward!" not a single tank moved - it just didn't start.
Can you say at least approximately how many times UFOs have met on the way of our aircraft?
- Hundreds of times. I can vouch for that.
