Very far from the truth. In 1776, Bavarian University professor Adam Weishaupt founded a club called the Order of the Perfectibilists, aka the Illuminati. The base included only a few hundred people who copied part of the mystical symbolism from the most popular Masonic lodges.

The eye means vigilant devotion to the people, but the phrase was generally invented by US Secretary of Agriculture Henry Wallace.

One of the craziest, but very popular theories, applies to the logos of large American corporations.
