For the first time in the world, synthetic blood created in a laboratory from stem cells will be tested on humans, according to Scotsman.
Scientists from the Scottish Center for Regenerative Medicine in Edinburgh, who received a special license for this, will test artificial blood on humans.
The researchers were uniquely licensed by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, which regulates medical products in the UK. This will allow scientists to tackle the continuous production of blood, creating a kind of industry.
Scientists say that the main goal of synthetic blood production is to solve problems with blood and donor shortages, as well as to prevent the transmission of infections from donated blood to people who need it.
Such production could be the first step towards larger clinical trials. It is possible that synthetic blood will be used everywhere in medicine in the future.
The researchers also said that stem cells from adult donors will now be used more often to grow different types of tissue, rather than embryos.
In addition, the license gives experts carte blanche for the production of drugs developed on stem cell technology. Such medications will treat patients who have had a stroke, as well as people suffering from Parkinson's disease, diabetes or cancer.
While other researchers have already been licensed to develop stem cell preparations for human trials, the Scottish team is the first team in the world to be granted permission to test synthetic blood.
