In June 1941, a very strange unusual event took place near Rostov-on-Don in the USSR. Popular rumor claimed that on Zeleny Island, located on the Don River not far from this southern city, an unknown aircraft of clearly non-Soviet aircraft crashed. What actually crashed there - a German reconnaissance aircraft of the newest unknown then design or a flying object of extraterrestrial intelligence?
The crash site was, in a matter of hours, cordoned off by a group of NKVD officers. Later, the entire territory of the island was fenced off with barbed wire, and the area was completely classified, not allowing unauthorized persons, and even more so journalists, to the accident site. The island was declared a closed zone.
In tarpaulin-covered trucks, secret equipment was secretly brought to the island across the bridge. There began active work on installation and construction, but what exactly is unknown. The local population only guessed, spreading gossip and putting forward hypotheses one after another. The fall of the aircraft literally rocked the entire city. To reassure the people, the military leadership assured the local population that routine planned military exercises were underway.
In November 1941, during the period of hostilities with fascist Germany, when Hitler's troops carried out a full-scale operation of the Second World War to capture Rostov-on-Don in order to break through to the Caucasus, parts of the Soviet army quickly left the city in five days, but firmly held the defenses on Island Green. What important military secret drove parts of our troops to fight fiercely for this small piece of land on the river?
The best soldiers of the special 230th elite regiment of the NKVD were thrown into the defense of a tiny piece of land. For several days, the Chekists, almost completely surrounded by enemy troops, fought fiercely in this sector of the front, but they held out and the island did not surrender to the enemy. The regiment's losses in manpower amounted to ninety percent. What was the reason for such a special attitude of the Soviet command to the Green Island as an important object of strategic importance?
In the declassified dossiers of this war period, there is a document shedding light on the reasons for such a fierce defense of Zeleny Island, almost to the last living soldier. It says that the Germans strenuously attacked the island as the most convenient place for establishing a crossing over the Don. Just at the very peak of hostilities, the 230th Chekist regiment selflessly covered the withdrawal of Soviet military units and the evacuation of civilians from Rostov-on-Don through the island to the southern bank of the Don. However, there was another reason - the soldiers of the regiment could not retreat at the last moment due to the complete destruction of the crossing by Soviet artillery. The Chekists remained on the island squeezed in a fiery grip, fighting with a dozen Nazi tanks that had escaped with practically no ammunition.
The military historical archives of the Great Patriotic War also contain information about the flying disc-shaped aircraft being developed in the fascist secret scientific design bureaus. In the post-war period, trophy films with a German documentary film containing a video report on the results of the FAU-7 project and a real filming of a flying saucer with a Nazi swastika on the skin were found in Australia. The development of a new military aircraft began in the middle of World War II, which means that the German flying disk could not crash in the Rostov-on-Don area in the early summer of 1941.
In the Soviet design bureaus, the idea of a UFO was considered absurd and unscientific, therefore the development of such aircraft was not carried out in them and was not even considered in the future. This means that the device that crashed on Green Island was not a Soviet starship. Space development in the USSR began after the end of the Great Patriotic War and the first intercontinental ballistic missile was launched into space only on October 4, 1957.

In the mid-80s of the 20th century, in the course of geodetic measurements and chemical studies of the composition of the soil before the planned construction of the pioneer camp "Donskoy Artek" in the soil of the Green Island, prohibited hazardous chemicals were found. At the same time, the only small settlement located on this dangerous land plot on the Don ceased to exist. At the same time, a recreation center built in the mid-50s of the last century was also liquidated on an island contaminated with chemicals.
All materials related to this island were strictly classified and only at the end of the 80s of the last century did the first publications about the secrets of the Green Island appear. The publicist Nikolai Grebeshko, for example, wrote in his notes about the existence of a direct connection between the fall of a strange aircraft and the defense of the Green Island. He claimed that an alien UFO crashed on the Don island.
In the mid-90s of the 20th century, researcher Yezhov published an article that a secret underground laboratory of Soviet special services and counterintelligence was working on a mysterious island. The entrance to it was disguised, and the local newspaper said that it was inside the only surviving main administrative building of the former recreation center. The author directly associates soil contamination with the failed experiments of this laboratory and the improper disposal of chemical waste, but not with the pre-war plane crash of any aircraft.
Modern studies indicate that precisely because of the illiterate military leadership on the southern front at the beginning of World War II, the history of fierce battles on Green Island was hushed up for decades so as not to discredit the Soviet military leadership, and is in no way connected with the pre-war crash there of an unknown aircraft.
