Scientists from Arizona State University have warned that the eruption of the Yellowstone volcano could threaten the global ecosystem and humanity. Contrary to past research, which reported that the geologic processes leading to the eruption would continue for thousands of years, the new data shows non-optimistic predictions.
The alarming predictions come from new research by experts at Arizona State University. The new study was carried out so that volcanologists could more accurately predict the next eruption of the supervolcano. The last eruption of Yellowstone occurred about 631 thousand years ago.
Recent scientific research has confirmed that there is a supervolcano beneath Yellowstone National Park that can spew thousands of cubic kilometers of rock and ash into the atmosphere, plunging the Earth into darkness. Without access to sunlight, the so-called volcanic winter can come.
During a volcanic winter, the planet's temperature drops, as ash, sulfuric acid and water block the penetration of sunlight. Then agricultural production will suffer, global famine will begin and many animal species will die out en masse due to the toxic effects of volcanic ash on the atmosphere.
Instead of the expected millennia, the volcano could erupt over the course of several years or several decades.
