The mysterious crash of a Taiwanese jet fighter off the Penghu Islands on October 20 made Taiwanese talk about the Asian "Bermuda Triangle"

The Penghu Islands, 80 kilometers west of Taiwan Island, are a popular resort. But the islands are notorious - at least three planes, one civilian helicopter and five jet fighters have crashed over the last 20 years.

There is information that during the Cold War spy planes disappeared over the islands, but the military still refuses to give accurate statistics on these facts.

The largest disaster occurred over Penghu in May 2002, when a plane of Taiwan's China Airlines with 225 passengers on board crashed.

Historians say that Japanese sailors, during the Japanese rule in Taiwan, which ended in 1945, tried not to enter the water area around Penghu, calling it "the devil's sea." Countless boats carrying Chinese migrants have sunk off the islands.

And although scientists do not confirm the existence of strong magnetic fields in the area, knocking down navigation instruments, Taiwan's "Bermudas" have already become the main topic of discussion on forums and blogs of the country.

Inhabitants of the "enchanted" islands fear a decrease in investment in the economy. After the last wave of talk about local “Bermuda”, the islands have experienced a significant outflow of tourists.

Local authorities refuse to believe in anomalies and blame heavy air traffic over the islands for the disasters.
