Swiss archaeologists have found a strange human burial while exploring an ancient cemetery located near the city of Schupfen. In one of the local graves, a skeleton was found, the owner of which was once buried face down. The Daily Mail writes about the mystical archaeological find.

The cemetery where the unusual burial was found was used from the thirteenth to the seventeenth century. At the same time, a person buried face down could be the last one who was interred here.

“In the strange grave there was, in fact, the skeleton itself, face down, as well as a number of no less strange objects - a knife and a purse with coins, which had stuck together into a single block since the burial,” says Christian Weiss, employee of the Department of Archeology the canton of Bern.

After analyzing the coins found near the bones, scientists found that they were minted in various European countries. The latest of them dates back to 1629. Taking into account the peculiarities of the coins, the researchers suggested that the strange burial probably belonged to a merchant.

But why this merchant was buried face down, and what the specific cause of death is is unknown. Maybe he was killed, and this orientation of the body was necessary to demonstrate some kind of special contempt for him by his gravediggers.
