It looks like science fiction, but the Italian research studio MHOX assures that one day it will make it all into reality. Its experts have developed the concept of a printed eye that can one day replace the natural human eyeball, which, frankly, does not have outstanding characteristics and is prone to wear and tear.

Scientists predict that the currently unusual opportunity to replace your own "outdated" eye with an artificial one will become available in January 2027.

The Italians' concept provides a fascinating insight into future improvements in human performance. Ultimately, artificial eyeballs will not only be able to heal people from blindness and vision loss, but also provide a person with such unusual opportunities as direct Internet access. MHOX is one hundred percent sure of this.

The artificial organ EYE (short for Enhance Your Eye) will be available in three models: Heal (for treatment), Enhanced (to improve visual performance) and Advanced (advanced model).

The first model will replace defective eyeballs and help blind and visually impaired people. The latter two models will offer consumers advanced features such as vision filters, wireless connectivity and fantastic visual acuity (up to 1.3, or 15/10 in English speaking countries). All three versions of EYE will be customized in size, shape and structural characteristics according to the needs and preferences of the purchaser.

All this will be possible thanks to 3D bioprinting: different bio-ink will produce different types of cells and tissues of the body, which will then be assembled together into a single organ.

However, so far all this is only a theory and is not technically feasible. At the moment, the entire concept of the EYE project is completely based on the possibilities of the future.

“For the synthetic eyes to work, the subject will have to surgically remove their real eyes,” said MHOX Lead Designer Filippo Nasetti. - Then they will be replaced by a new artificial organ that will be connected to the brain. This will allow for modernization and replacement of artificial eyes. This technology opens up great prospects, but it is also associated with great risks. We are challenging modern concepts of artificial organs."
