It turns out that almost two weeks before the famous Roswell incident, when a flying saucer crashed into the desert near New Mexico in July 1947, American pilot Kenneth Arnold saw nine UFOs flying at high speed.
On a flight from Chehalis to Yakima, Washington, the 32-year-old American pilot saw a strange flash of light.
"I watched a chain of nine unusual objects flying from north to south near Mount Rainier," - according to the pilot, who was at an altitude of 3000 meters, the UFOs moved at a speed of about 2000 km / h and were visible for three minutes.
After landing in Yakima, he told a friend about his observations, but he did not believe him. Arnold first described the objects as a "baking dish" shaped like a crescent or boomerang, but later added that they looked like "deep bowls". After that, the term "flying saucers" appeared in the media.
On July 12, 1947, Kenneth Arnold at Hamilton Field in California met with US Air Force officials Lt. Frank Brown and Captain William Davidson, who concluded that the pilot was telling the truth about UFOs.
“Kenneth Arnold really saw what he was talking about,” the report said. "It is hard to believe that a person with such character and sincere honesty could claim to have seen objects and describe them in full if he had not seen them."
The pilot gave a detailed description of the snow-capped peaks of the Cascade Mountains, orographic clouds over the mountains, water spots on the window, and even flying pelicans.
“As a Born American, unless these UFOs are made by our science or our Air Force, I tend to believe they are extraterrestrial in origin,” said the pilot, who three years later claimed to have seen three more similar objects in the sky.
