The longest ancient Türkic runic monument in the Altai Republic was found by historians in the Ongudai region, the press center of the republican government reports.

“Ongudai historians, exploring the mountain range in the vicinity of the village of Bichiktu-Boom, came across a unique ancient Türkic runic inscription. On a piece of stone that fell off one of the nearby rocks, 68 runic symbols were inscribed. According to the researchers, this inscription is the longest ancient Türkic runic monument found in the Altai Mountains. The work on deciphering the inscription is still not finished,”the message says.

The preliminary meaning of the inscribed phrase sounds something like: “I am writing on the eternal rock. I ask the owners of the area for health and long life."

With the onset of warmth, the researchers plan to re-visit the place of discovery in order to search for possibly missing fragments of the text. After the work on decoding, the stone is planned to be transferred to the local history museum of the village of Ongudai.

Ancient Türkic runic writing is a script that existed among some of the ancient Türkic tribes in the VIII-X centuries on the territory of Central Asia and resembles Germanic runes in the form of signs.
